Joe Cox, LMSW
Associate Clinician
Accepting new clients.
Joe is a Licensed Master of Social Work currently seeing clients under the supervision of Kristine Reynolds (LICSW). Joe completed his Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Philosophy at the University of West Florida; he also completed his Master of Social Work degree at West Florida.
Joe has comprehensive experiences with trauma-informed care. His psychology career began in 2017 when he volunteered for Crisis Text Line. He then continued this work by becoming a Mental Health Technician working in substance abuse rehab centers, acute stabilization centers, and inpatient care hospitals. He then practiced social work and case-management within inpatient care for three years. Through this work, he developed a passion not only for trauma-informed practice, but also for adolescents and geriatrics. He has also practiced as a college counselor, working closely with students of all varieties, and he is dedicated to learning all that he can about himself and his patients regardless of the practice he occupies. He values, above all, opportunities to grow alongside his clients, and he does not take an authoritative stance on clinical practice. He believes we are here to learn from each other.
Joe primarily practices Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) therapy with elements of psychoanalysis, DBT, and IFS. Joe takes a client-centric approach, meaning that he is open to accommodating any treatment modality, spirituality, or ethnicity that his clients identify with. Currently, Joe is reconnecting with philosophy, investing in myth and spirituality, and practicing psychosomatic health. He is particularly passionate about working with complex trauma (cPTSD), neurodiversity, and personality. Throughout his career, he has specialized in suicide treatment, and he is particularly passionate about helping chronically depressed, anxious, or suicidal people.
With his ACT-informed approach, Joe treats trauma not as an opportunity to “fix” or to “repair,” but as a chance to understand, appreciate, and accept the human experience. He does not require any client, nor himself, to eliminate or control any emotion, but only to accommodate their needs and feelings in meaningful ways. He conceptualizes of experiences relationally, and he works with clients to help them understand how they have developed within context. This approach, he hopes, helps clients relieve themselves of shame, deepen their relationship to their bodies, and embrace their social experiences.
Joe currently works out of the Winooski office, and accepts Medicaid, BCBS, Cigna, and MVP.
